Statement on the Restoration of U.S. Support for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

Washington, D.C., July 29, 2026 – Shot@Life welcomes the news that the Department of State has committed to contributing the full $600 million in congressionally appropriated funds to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and applauds Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Gavi CEO Sania Nishtar for working together to preserve this essential partnership.

We will continue fighting to make Americans safer by eradicating infectious disease threats abroad.”

Shot@Life is deeply grateful to Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle whose longstanding support for Gavi helped make this announcement possible, particularly Senate and House Appropriations leadership: Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI), Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), and Rep. Lois Frankel (D-FL). Consistent, bipartisan support for Gavi reflects a shared recognition that vaccines are among the world’s most effective—and cost-effective—health investments.

Gavi requires partner countries to steadily increase their own investments and ultimately finance their immunization programs independently. Since 2000, 19 countries have graduated from Gavi assistance and taken responsibility for their own national disease prevention programs. Two have become Gavi donors.

This model of country ownership, accountability, and long-term sustainability reflects American values of self-reliance where countries pay their fair share, while delivering life-saving impact.

This news also comes as Ebola continues to surge in Central Africa. Gavi has committed $50 million to support outbreak response and accelerate development of a vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain, underscoring the Alliance’s leading role in helping stop dangerous diseases before they spread.
