Statement on U.S. Five-Year Pledge to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance
U.S. Administration makes first-ever five-year pledge to support the critical work of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
The Shot@Life campaign applauds the Biden Administration’s historic pledge of at least $1.58 billion to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, over the next five years.
The pledge, made via video by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at the Global Forum for Vaccine Sovereignty and Innovation in Paris, is the first time the U.S. has made a five-year commitment to Gavi aligning with the Alliance’s next strategic cycle.
Over the next five years, Gavi will redouble its efforts to reach millions of zero-dose children who have not received a vaccine of any kind, continue expanding its vaccine portfolio to tackle diseases including HPV and malaria, and support the creation of the new African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator to increase production capacity on the continent. U.S. support will be critical to these initiatives, which have the potential to help Gavi vaccinate one billion more children in low-resource countries within the next decade.
“We are grateful to the Administration for this historic pledge and for demonstrating the U.S.’s continued leadership in global health and commitment to a world where no child dies of vaccine-preventable diseases,” said Martha Rebour, Executive Director of Shot@Life. “U.S. support for Gavi will help reach children in urgent need with lifesaving vaccines and will greatly contribute to the health, safety, and security of Americans and the wider world. We look forward to working with Congress over the coming years to ensure this pledge is fully funded.”
