Washington, D.C. (September 1, 2020) For the eighth consecutive year, Walgreens is teaming up with the United Nations Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign for the Get a Shot. Give a Shot.® program to provide lifesaving vaccines to children around the world. Starting Sept. 1 through Dec. 31, 2020, for every flu shot or other vaccination administered, Walgreens will make a donation to the UN Foundation up to $2.6 million.

Around the world, one in five children lacks access to lifesaving vaccines. Funds donated through Get a Shot. Give a Shot.® go toward UN organizations working to improve the health of millions of children around the world, such as the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Since the inception of the campaign, Walgreens has helped provide 50 million measles and polio vaccines to children in countries such as Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, and Venezuela. The company has set a goal of helping to provide 100 million lifesaving vaccines to children in need by 2024.

“The UN Foundation is proud to once again partner with Walgreens on the Get a Shot. Give a Shot. program,” said Elizabeth Cousens, President and CEO of the United Nations Foundation. “Flu shots are even more critical this year with the pandemic interrupting routine immunizations for millions of children around the world and threatening decades of progress against vaccine-preventable diseases. This program is a true win for everyone – by protecting your own health, you will help give other children a shot at a happy and healthy life.”

Amidst the expectation that the upcoming flu season will coincide with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization urges everyone over six months of age to get a seasonal flu shot—the most effective way to prevent infection by influenza viruses—to help protect themselves and their communities from vaccine-preventable illnesses. Investing in proven interventions like vaccines also helps to strengthen health systems around the world – which is critical because as this pandemic has shown, a threat anywhere is a threat everywhere.

“Our company purpose is to help people live healthier and happier lives,” said Alain Turenne, Walgreens vice president of Corporate Social Responsibility. “Each time a customer receives a shot at Walgreens, we donate a vaccine of similar value to a person in need. We could not impact millions of children without the support of our customers around the U.S. who make these achievements possible.”
