What brought you to Shot@Life? Can you describe your previous work experiences?
I recently graduated with my bachelor’s degree from UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, where I began to explore the international health field. Prior to joining the Shot@Life team, I gained valuable experience working with large public institutions involved in this field, such as the CDC and PAHO/WHO. My experience at PAHO working with a UN agency showed me how impactful UN programs are, but also how the issues that the UN works on are so often underfunded and do not receive the attention they deserve. I was drawn to the UN Foundation because I believe that the work they do to advocate and support UN initiatives is so important to achieving universal health and well-being for all.
What has been your favorite moment since joining the team?
Although I have only been here for about two weeks, I have gotten to experience a lot of cool UN Foundation events. It was fun to learn about the organization’s history and future vision at the all-staff meeting, and, of course, the annual holiday party was a blast.
What do you think the biggest challenge is for vaccine advocacy?
I think the biggest challenge is ensuring that decision-makers and the public are informed with evidence-based knowledge on vaccines, because there is so much inaccurate information out there that can lead to extreme beliefs toward vaccines that can be greatly harmful to public health.
What do you wish more people knew about advocacy in general?
That anyone can be an advocate! There are so many resources out there to help educate yourself about an infinite number of topics and you do not have to be an expert to advocate for an issue that is important to you.
What excites you most about your work on the campaign?
I am excited to meet the advocates and to participate in the 2020 Champion Summit in February!
Do you have any fun facts that our Champions may not know about you?
I love to speak Spanish and I am currently binge watching the Mexican comedy/Telenovela House of Flowers!
