Committed, passionate and hardworking are just a few of the many ways to describe Uchechi Emelogu. As an economist, Emelogu believes that providing good health is the most cost-effective way to save lives, improve health and ensure long-term prosperity. She has a passion for empowering women, youth and children in Africa as reflected in her service history. Over the past 10 years, Emelogu has volunteered with many different organizations to promote human rights in developing countries.
Emelogu is currently serving as a United Nations Foundation Champion representing the state of Mississippi at Shot@Life. The main mission of Shot@Life is to save lives in developing countries by providing vaccines. As a Shot@Life Champion, Emelogu is responsible for connecting Americans to vaccines and help people realize that vaccines are one of the most cost-effective ways to save the lives of children in developing countries.
Emelogu has served as a youth advocate for HIV and AIDS through the West African Women Association for the past seven years. She also has volunteered at many organizations, including the Regional and National Focal Points Program, Global Youth Coalition, and the Youth Activist Program, which works to provide affordable sexual health information globally. Additionally, Emelogu has also worked with children and youth in broadcasting in Nigeria to train children in media advocacy, leadership and community involvement and to advocate for health rights of young people. Lastly, she has been involved with United Nations Population Fund, American Red Cross, World Health Organization and UNICEF.
For Emelogu, her inspiration for her passionate volunteer work comes from the following Nelson Mandela quote: “Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation.”
Emelogu believes that the time to start is now and that everyone can and should do something to make the world a better place. “Do you have the vision?” asks Emelogu. “Have you got the passion? Then start taking action. The world indeed is hungry for action, not words.” Emologu is a gem to the Starkville community, Mississippi, Nigeria, Africa and an inspiration to the world.
